This collection deconstructs, analyses and interprets one of thee most recognisable figures in Greek Mythology, Medusa, a tale with many versions and lifetimes of symbols.
Medusa was more than just a manipulative monster, cursed by Athena turning her into what we know today; the head full of snakes and a gaze that turns men to stone. The combination of light transparent fabrics with the contrast of heavy, textured fabrics used depicts this loss of lightness. The manipulation of textile draping inspired by greek statues reinforces this.
Medusa also known as ‘Gorgo’ comes from the ancient Greek word “guardian”. This collection depicts a powerful feminine symbol; the divine kundalini energy. Snakes have always had a stigma of evilness stemming from the story of Adam & Eve. The use of embroidered snakes and apple-shaped volumes represents an alternative symbol, the natural cycle of life, with the shed and regrowth of their skin. Finding the beauty in decay was explored through the manipulations and upcycling construction.
